It Started With a Kidnapped Pig...
Scores of isolated homesteads are scattered across the Dessarin Valley. Not even the lifelong residents of the Dessarin Valley know exactly where all the outlying farms and ranches are, and characters traveling cross country might stumble across lonely protected farmhouses or ranches of family or other groups.
A homestead usually comprises a farmhouse with thick shutters for the windows and a bar for the door, a barn or two containing livestock, a feed crib, and crops or pastures nearby. Some are bigger, walled communities comprising several families. Most homesteaders are humans or halflings. They gladly welcome travelers (especially adventurers who look like they’re trying to chase away outlaws and monsters) and are eager for news. They will also likely have news of the local area. Homesteaders can usually point the way to the nearest town or neighboring homesteads (there is usually another homestead within 10 to 20 miles).
